Seven and a half hours on the sand

Leap runs its 44th Annual Sandcastle Classic on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at Ocean Beach at Balboa Street in San Francisco. The organiser's event schedule publishes the beach day hour by hour. Teams arrive, check in and walk to their assigned beach site between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Students arrive between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sandcastle building runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The award ceremony starts at 3:15 p.m. The event ends at 3:30 p.m.

The first check-in to the close measures 7.5 hours. The build itself runs 3.5 hours. The organiser's 2026 media release prints the public window as "Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 11 AM - 3:30 PM", which is 4.5 hours.

Day-use slots run six hours each

hotelSlots sells day-use rooms in four slots: Morning (6 a.m. to 12 p.m.), Afternoon (12 p.m. to 6 p.m.), Evening (6 p.m. to 12 a.m.) and Overnight (12 a.m. to 6 a.m.). The platform's glossary describes a day-use room as "typically 6 to 8 hours" and offers one slot or several combined for full-day coverage.

Run the timetable against those slots. A morning slot opens at 6:00 a.m., two hours before the first check-in, and closes at noon, one hour into the build. An afternoon slot opens at noon, one and a half hours before the build closes, and runs to 6:00 p.m., two and a half hours past the event close. A team that wants the room from the 8:00 a.m. check-in through the 3:30 p.m. close takes both slots. The pair covers 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The organiser publishes no locker, shower or wi-fi line

A case-insensitive count across the organiser's home, event info, schedule, FAQ, participation, press, team resources, sponsors and judges pages returns zero hits for locker, shower, restroom, wi-fi and shuttle. The word parking appears once, inside a judge's biography. The event site documents none of those conveniences.

The build closes at 2:30 p.m. and the awards start at 3:15 p.m. A day-use room covers that gap and the change of clothes after the sand.

Five directory properties sit near Balboa Street

The hotelSlots San Francisco directory lists 562 properties. Five carry ZIP codes on the city's west side: Seal Rock Inn at 545 Point Lobos Avenue, 94121; Motel 6 at 1234 Great Highway, 94122; SeaScape Inn - A FairBridge Hotel at 4340 Judah Street, 94122; Ocean Inn at 4211 Judah Street, 94122; and Mirage Inn & Suites San Francisco at 2600 Sloat Boulevard, 94116.

Driving distance from Balboa Street at Great Highway, read on October 14, 2026: 1.1 miles to Seal Rock Inn, 1.2 miles to Motel 6, 1.2 miles to SeaScape Inn, 1.2 miles to Ocean Inn and 3.1 miles to Mirage Inn & Suites. The organiser publishes no distance to any property, so treat each figure as a road route from that junction and recheck on the day.

Nine published day rates, all downtown

The day-rate marketplace lists a San Francisco city average of $119.61 for a day room and nine city-scoped cards, read on October 14, 2026. Hotel Bijou - Union Square lists $85 against a $275 nightly comparison. The Mosser lists $91 against $299. Hotel Caza Fisherman's Wharf lists $107 against $350. Hilton San Francisco Financial District lists $116 against $299. Axiom Hotel San Francisco lists $122 against $299. Hotel Zeppelin San Francisco lists $138 against $399. Hotel Zelos San Francisco lists $144 against $399. Hotel Zetta San Francisco lists $152 against $399. Taj Campton Place lists $159 against $340.

All nine sit in downtown districts. The marketplace returns no card and no district page for the Sunset, the Richmond or Ocean Beach.

Registration, prices and the fundraising goal

The 2026 fundraising goal is $300,000, which the organiser puts at about 30 percent of the cost of delivering Leap's arts education programs. A team pays a $500 registration fee and sets a fundraising goal of at least $5,000. A team pairs three to five company partners with one partner school classroom. Team registration has closed. Individual participant registration runs through October 15, 2026. The public drops in on October 24 without registering. Admission is free and the event runs rain or shine.

Booking notes

hotelSlots reports day-use rates at 30 to 75 percent below the nightly rate at the same property, lists 103,857+ properties across 46 states, and names Florida, Hawaii, Iowa and Washington as the four states that restrict day-use bookings under state travel laws. California is not among the four. Rates change, so recheck the figure at booking.

One wording on the organiser's site is worth checking before the morning of October 24. The FAQ page says the Classic "will take place online" on October 24. The home page, the schedule page and the media release each place it at Ocean Beach at Balboa Street. Confirm details with Leap at sandcastle@leaparts.org or (415) 512-1899.
