The U.S. Botanic Garden runs Season's Greenings: National Parks and Historic Places from November 26, 2026 through January 3, 2027 at 100 Maryland Avenue SW. The Conservatory and the outdoor train display open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and both close December 25. Admission is free, no tickets are required, and nothing is reserved.
A traveller with an hour between two appointments gets an indoor stop three blocks from a Metro platform.
What the show is
The Garden describes the 2026 show as poinsettias, evergreens, holiday decor and a train show built on America's 250th anniversary. Model trains pass 37 plant-built entries, among them the Grand Canyon landscape, Mount Vernon, the Statue of Liberty, Old Faithful Inn and the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. Inside, more than 20 D.C. landmarks made from plant parts include the Lincoln Memorial, the U.S. Capitol and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
The trains run in the gated outdoor gardens. The Conservatory carries the landmark collection and the poinsettias. A visit covers both halves of the campus.
Six nights that run to 8 p.m.
The Garden extends the close to 8 p.m. on December 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 and 29, with live holiday music from 5 to 8 and food and drink vendors on the grounds. Four of those dates fall on a Tuesday and two on a Thursday. Every other day closes at 5 p.m.
Three blocks from the platform
Federal Center SW on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines puts the Conservatory entrance three blocks away. The Garden's directions run north along Third Street SW for two blocks, across Independence Avenue, then one more block to Maryland Avenue. Metrobus D10 stops behind the Conservatory at Independence Avenue and First Street SW, and the D1X stops on Independence Avenue at Third Street SW.
No car park
The Garden holds no parking lot and no tour bus parking. Eight paid accessible meter spaces sit within two blocks, and metered street spaces serve the rest. Rideshare and taxi passengers drop on Maryland Avenue in front of the accessible paths. Tour buses use the marked route to Parking Lot B at Union Station.
Across the avenue
Bartholdi Fountain and Gardens run from dawn to dusk every day, including holidays, with access from Independence Avenue, Washington Avenue and First Street SW.
Two conditions travel with the visit. The outdoor train display may not run in inclement weather. The Garden reports its busiest days on holidays and the weekends around them, and names Tuesdays and Wednesdays as the least busy days.
Where the day room fits
A day-use room takes the hour before the Garden opens and the hours after it closes. The dayuse.com Washington, D.C. page, read on 23 October 2026, carries 38 day-rate cards. Three of them sit within two miles and sell a window that runs into the evening, which matters on the six late nights.
The Courtyard Washington Capitol Hill/Navy Yard at 140 L Street SE sits 0.83 straight-line miles from the Garden. Its card reads $114 against $270, with windows of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and no booking fee shown.
The Holiday Inn Express Washington DC Downtown at 317 K Street NW sits 1.02 miles out. Its card reads $90 against $170, with windows of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and no booking fee shown.
Hotel Zena at 1155 14th Street NW sits 1.55 miles out. Its card reads $125 against $210, with a $9 prepaid fee and windows of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
None of the three publishes a check-out term. The end of the window is the hour the key goes back.
hotelSlots sells four slots, morning, afternoon, evening and overnight, quotes day rates at 30 to 75 percent below the nightly rate, and charges $0 in fees.
The shape of the gap
A meeting that ends at 11 and an evening event at 7 leaves eight hours. The Garden covers the middle of it indoors, at no cost, with restrooms and a second garden across the street. A day room covers the edges: a place for a coat and a bag, a desk for a call, and a shower before the evening.
The published figures: November 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Conservatory and train display 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, closed December 25. Bartholdi dawn to dusk. Six evenings to 8 p.m., December 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 and 29. Admission free, no tickets. Three day rates from $90 to $125 across 0.83 to 1.55 miles.
