One Session, One Hour: Pricing a Charleston Day Room

The Charleston Literary Festival runs November 6 to 15, 2026 at the Dock Street Theatre, 135 Church Street. Sessions last one hour. Most tickets cost $30. A reader who plans a full day buys five hours of programming and holds four one-hour gaps. The nearest day room on the Dayuse Charleston listing costs $85.

The one-hour unit

The What to Expect page states the rule: "Sessions start promptly on time and last 60 minutes." The format is a 45 minute conversation followed by 15 minutes of audience Q&A. Book signings follow each session on site.

The FAQ adds the scheduling constraint: "Only one event is scheduled at a time, so you never have to miss a speaker." Programmes do not overlap, so a reader cannot stack two sessions into one hour.

The 2026 programme page prints $30 beside most slots. That figure buys 60 minutes.

The grid has four shapes

Three days run five slots at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.: November 8, 10 and 15.

November 9 and 12 start an hour earlier, at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. November 11 runs four slots from 10 a.m. November 7 runs 11 a.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. November 13 runs 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

November 6 opens at 9 a.m. and closes with a 5 p.m. screening of Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie. The programme states that the event lasts three hours in total.

November 14 carries seven slots. It adds a 9 a.m. family performance of Pete the Cat and Friends, free for children aged 12 and under, and a 9.30 a.m. session with Kwame Onwuachi and Hunter Lewis at $35. The programme notes that session takes place at The Charleston Gaillard Center. It is the one slot on the grid that leaves Dock Street.

November 15 closes at 7 p.m. with a staged reading of Virginia Woolf's Freshwater: A Comedy, directed by Dominic Dromgoole, at $30.

What the gap already includes

A 60-minute session starting at 11 a.m. ends at 12 p.m. The next slot starts at 1 p.m. The interval matches the session.

The What to Expect page names the furniture of that interval: "There is a concession stand for light bites and refreshments and a beautiful courtyard to enjoy them in between sessions. You will also be able to purchase speakers books at our pop-up bookstore!"

A five-session day runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Five hours are programmed and four are not. The courtyard, the concession stand and the pop-up bookstore occupy the four.

What the day rooms cost

The Dayuse Charleston listing returned seven priced cards on 25 October 2026. Day rates run $76 to $135.75 with booking fees included. The mean is $96.25 and the median $96.

No card sits on the peninsula. The nearest is Best Western Patriots Point at $85, made up of a $79 rate and a $6 fee. It sits 2.53 straight-line miles from the Dock Street Theatre coordinates 32.7780353, -79.9295998. Its windows are 8-14, 9-17 and 17-23.

The cheapest card is Econo Lodge Goose Creek at $76, 17.05 miles out. Embassy Suites by Hilton Charleston Airport charges $135.75 for a single 9-17 window. Quality Inn Coliseum North Charleston runs $81 on three windows, including 10-18. StayAPT Suites North Charleston and two Comfort Inn properties fill the middle of the list at $96 to $100.

Pricing the hour against the room

The nearest card sells eight hours on its 9-17 window for $85. That works out at $10.62 an hour.

Divide the same $85 by the four gaps in a five-session day. Each gap costs $21.25. The courtyard seats a reader for nothing.

$85 buys 2.83 sessions at $30. A reader attending two sessions spends $60 on tickets and $85 on the room. At three sessions the two figures draw level. At five sessions the tickets reach $150 and the room stands at 57 percent of that. The room's cost per hour falls as the day fills.

The festival's own block

The Hotel Partners page names nine options with attendee terms. The Francis Marion Hotel takes discount code CLF2026. The Charleston Place takes corporate ID 64410. Charleston Vacays takes CHSLIT. The page publishes no rate for any of the nine, so a reader who wants the festival block requests a quote. The day-use card is the only published number for the week.

One count shapes the planning. On 25 October 2026 the 2026 programme page carried 46 priced slot rows: 27 at $30, two at "From $30", 15 marked SOLD OUT, one free and one at $35. Fourteen slots offered an At-Home Livestream at $10. The free slot is the Fellows showcase at 1 p.m. on November 10.

The rule for this week

Price the room per gap. A reader who attends one session pays $30 for an hour of programming and $85 for a room held across eight. A reader who attends all five pays $150 and uses that room across a nine-hour day.

The bridge sets the floor. At 2.53 miles the nearest card needs a car or a rideshare in each direction, so the room serves an arrival and a departure. The 17-23 window on the Best Western suits the reader who takes the 7 p.m. finale and a morning flight from CHS, a 20 minute drive from downtown.

Book the room against the gaps you will fill. Below three sessions, the courtyard is the cheaper room.
